Womanly Tales

Quick notes on Thanksgiving, 2011

I am getting late for work and have seven minutes to share these quick thoughts from my morning. Why am I getting late? Due to an evening of over-eating that ate into my sleep as my body struggled with digesting what I’d stupidly consumed.

Listening to the Beeb I learnt that people in South Africa spend more time attending funerals than they do marriages. The report was about how costly it has become to provide a ‘decent’ send off to the dead in South Africa. What followed in detail was an appalling account of consumption…
In India too, the Beeb reports that dead are having to queue up for a good send off in Varanasi – where it is believed by Hindus that if you were cremated there, you would get moksha – or freedom from rebirth. Given the rise of affluent Indians, more and more Indians are bringing their dead to Varanasi to ensure the fruits of moksha.

Next I heard the question – Are you a small business who’s struggling to survive in this climate? And it occurred to me, well – perhaps our family needs to run a stress test to see if we’ll survive the economic slow down. Interesting timing though for such a thought – just as we come towards December / January where we tend to spend the most in travel and shopping.
